Natural Interfaces

HiveMind

With the Playgrounds Festival - a yearly 5-day showcase of digital art for those who are curious, brave and dare to step outside of the box - as the client for this project, we were challenged to design and realize an interactive installation capable of enchanting, surprising and contriving both participants and bystanders within the main theme of 'human versus machine'. The installations created by all participating CMD project groups were exhibited during an exposition at Breda Central Station (the Netherlands). As such an exhibition entails a widely spread target audience of high variety, 'design for all' was deemed key. Inspiration was drawn from the 'zwermgeest' (swarming spirit)-scenario as presented in the book 'Kunstmatig van Nature' [1] (Artificial by Nature) by philosopher Jos de Mul. This 'zwermgeest'-scenario envisions the future as individuals' narrative identity being replaced by a data-identity of ex-individuals [1]. Each individual will become part of the collective and will act solely for the benefit of the collective, inspired by observed behavior of some insect species, like ants and bees. It is speculated that within these insect species all individual 'workers' are being controlled by one 'queen' and that all individual workers can see, feel and smell through each others' senses. The idea of 'seeing through each others' eyes from the perspective of one supreme being' has been directly translated into an experienceable installation: HiveMind.

HiveMind consists of a dome-like structure which was realized from PVC pipes. This dome functions both as a physical barrier between participants and audience, providing safety for the people who are participating inside the dome, and a visual stage, making sure that the audience outside the dome is engaged with the installation and therewith becomes an active part of the experience. A webcam is mounted at the top of the dome and is faced straight down. The video output received from the webcam is connected to a laptop that runs a MaxMSP program that splits the webcam video output and wirelessly streams it to four mobile phones that are placed inside Virtual Reality glasses. The VR-glasses are worn by the participants, who can now only see the world from a bird-perspective. This part of the installation carries for the experience of living as a collective. However, to live as a collective also means to be capable of functioning as a collective, which was tackled by having the participants perform a challenge or game within a limited amount of time.

A column with a mounted display screen is placed inside the middle of the dome. The display screen displays four randomly selected distinctive colors, which can be seen by the participants through the VR-glasses. Inside the dome, there are ten pressure panels mounted on the floor, each of one colored in a color that may match the colors as displayed on the display screen. The participants are challenged to 'disable' each color as presented on the display screen by finding the matching pressure panel and 'pressing the color off' by stepping on the pressure panel within a limited amount of time. When the participants have succeeded in performing this task by disabling all four colors within the time constraint, four new colors will appear on the display screen, each round with less time available.

Playgrounds Festival

As an extra incentive for this project, it was established that Leon van Rooij - Director and Curator of the Playgrounds Festival - would attend the exhibition at Breda Central Station and would select one interactive installation that may be showcased during the actual Playgrounds Festival 2016 in Breda and Amsterdam.

It was utterly exciting that - among dozens of other interactive installations - HiveMind was selected as the winner of this challenge.

We were provided with a budget to iterate and perfect the installation, resulting in a more mature and professional version of HiveMind that was exhibited at the Playgrounds Festival 2016, both in Breda and Amsterdam (the Netherlands). It was amazing to have been granted this opportunity and it's something that I will never forget.
